Description
A creamy and delicious Vietnamese dessert, Bánh Flan is a caramel custard that is popular in Southeast Asia.
Ingredients
- 4 large eggs
- 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
- 2 cups whole milk
- 1/2 cup granulated sugar
- 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
Instructions
- Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C).
- In a saucepan, melt the sugar over medium heat until it turns into a golden caramel. Pour the caramel into the bottom of a baking dish or individual ramekins.
- In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, whole milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
- Pour the egg mixture over the caramel in the baking dish or ramekins.
- Place the baking dish or ramekins in a larger baking pan and fill the pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the dish or ramekins.
- Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until the flan is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.
- Remove from the oven and let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
- To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan and invert onto a plate.
Notes
- Ensure the caramel is not burnt, as it will give a bitter taste to the flan.
- For a smoother texture, strain the egg mixture before pouring it over the caramel.
