Description

A creamy and delicious Vietnamese dessert, Bánh Flan is a caramel custard that is popular in Southeast Asia.


Ingredients

  • 4 large eggs
  • 1 can (14 ounces) sweetened condensed milk
  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 1/2 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract


Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 325°F (160°C).
  2. In a saucepan, melt the sugar over medium heat until it turns into a golden caramel. Pour the caramel into the bottom of a baking dish or individual ramekins.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the eggs, sweetened condensed milk, whole milk, and vanilla extract until smooth.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the caramel in the baking dish or ramekins.
  5. Place the baking dish or ramekins in a larger baking pan and fill the pan with hot water until it reaches halfway up the sides of the dish or ramekins.
  6. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes, or until the flan is set but still slightly jiggly in the center.
  7. Remove from the oven and let cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours before serving.
  8. To serve, run a knife around the edges of the flan and invert onto a plate.

Notes

  • Ensure the caramel is not burnt, as it will give a bitter taste to the flan.
  • For a smoother texture, strain the egg mixture before pouring it over the caramel.
