Description

Albanian Byrek is a traditional Eastern European dish featuring layers of flaky filo dough filled with a savory mixture of spinach and feta cheese.


Ingredients

  • 500g fresh spinach, washed and chopped
  • 200g feta cheese, crumbled
  • 1 package of filo dough
  • 2 tablespoons olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste
  • 1 egg, beaten (optional, for brushing)


Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
  2. In a large bowl, combine the chopped spinach, crumbled feta cheese, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
  3. Lay one sheet of filo dough on a clean surface and brush lightly with olive oil. Repeat with several more sheets, layering them on top of each other.
  4. Spread the spinach and feta mixture evenly over the layered filo sheets.
  5. Roll the filo sheets with the filling into a log or fold them into a pie shape, depending on your preference.
  6. Place the byrek on a baking tray and brush the top with the beaten egg for a golden finish, if desired.
  7. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the filo is golden brown and crispy.
  8. Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.

Notes

  • Ensure the filo dough is covered with a damp cloth while working to prevent it from drying out.
  • Byrek can be served warm or at room temperature.
