Description
Albanian Byrek is a traditional Eastern European dish featuring layers of flaky filo dough filled with a savory mixture of spinach and feta cheese.
Ingredients
- 500g fresh spinach, washed and chopped
- 200g feta cheese, crumbled
- 1 package of filo dough
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 egg, beaten (optional, for brushing)
Instructions
- Preheat the oven to 180°C (350°F).
- In a large bowl, combine the chopped spinach, crumbled feta cheese, olive oil, salt, and pepper. Mix well.
- Lay one sheet of filo dough on a clean surface and brush lightly with olive oil. Repeat with several more sheets, layering them on top of each other.
- Spread the spinach and feta mixture evenly over the layered filo sheets.
- Roll the filo sheets with the filling into a log or fold them into a pie shape, depending on your preference.
- Place the byrek on a baking tray and brush the top with the beaten egg for a golden finish, if desired.
- Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the filo is golden brown and crispy.
- Remove from the oven and let it cool slightly before serving.
Notes
- Ensure the filo dough is covered with a damp cloth while working to prevent it from drying out.
- Byrek can be served warm or at room temperature.
